Parkview LL brings the Vineyard LL Dream Season to a close... |
|
|
The Vineyard boys dropped their second game at the State Tournament Monday night which eliminated Vineyard from the tournament. Parkiew powered their way by Vineyard to earn the victory 16-6.
Vineyard got off to a hot start when Nick Schwetz and Niko Navarro hit back to back HOME RUNS in the 1st inning to give Vineyard a 2 - 0 lead. Vineyard could have scored more but the boys left two runners in scoring position in the 1st. Gio Villanueva got through a rocky 1st inning and was able to leave two runners on base at the end of one.
Vineyard added three more runs in the top of the 2nd when Daniel Garcia had an RBI single to score David Young who had walked. Nick Schwetz had an RBI ground out to 2nd to score Andrew Garcia who reached base on a fielder's choice. Then Niko Navarro hit a shot off the fence to score Daniel Garcia with the 3rd run of the inning. Vineyard looked to be in control 5- 0.
However, in the bottom of the 2nd, Parkview responded with a lead off double followed by a single which put runners on the corners. Gio battled through to strike out the next two batters but an error led to an unearned run and an extension of the inning. After a two out walk to load the bases, the 11 year old Parkview "man-child" (all 6'2" of him) got a hold of a high fastball for a grand slam to tie the game. The homer seemed to take the momentum away from the Vineyard boys and it was all downhill from there. At the end of two, Vineyard 5 - Parkview 5.
Vineyard went 1-2-3 in the top of the 3rd and then Parkview got a lead off Home Run in the bottom of the 3rd to completely steal the momentum from thr Vineyard team. Parkview went on to score 6 runs in the 3rd inning as the Vineyard defense faltered and the Parkview team hit the ball hard. At the end of 3: Parkview 11 - Vineyard 5.
Vineyard added a run in the 4th after Daniel Garcia doubled and Niko Navarro drove him in with another smash off the fence. However, Parkview sealed the mercy win in the bottom of the 4th when they scored 5 runs including their 3rd home run of the game. Final score: Parkview 16 - Vineyard 6.
In the bottom of the 4th, the Vineyard spirit manifested itself loud and clear when Daniel Garcia took the mound. We were down by eight runs and the Parkview Giant was at the plate. The coaching staff encouraged Daniel to blow it by the Home Run hitting 1st baseman which led to Daniel simply smiling at the comment and then promptly getting the hitter to pop up. Unfortunately, our defense faltered again but the FUN of the moment and the EXCITEMENT of the Vineyard run to the State Tournament was epitomized in that one brief moment. All the kids seemed to appreciate that although we went down, we had ALOT of GOOD TIMES & GOOD MEMORIES from the experience and the FUN of the GAME was what it was all about!
We're very proud of all the boys on the team! Besides each players talent and skill level, much of the team's success had to do with the chemistry created by the coaching staff and the boys "buying in" to the TEAM CONCEPT that was reinforced from the first day the boys stepped on the field. We're optimistic that this POSITIVE SPIRIT can be repeated next year and that the STATE CHAMPIONSHIP can be EARNED if the boys work hard, play catch well, hit the ball hard and ENCOURAGE ONE ANOTHER!!!
LET'S GO VINEYARD!!!
Team Awards for the Game were:
Mr. Positive: Jason Bennett, Dakota Oberhauser, Jojo Hamilton and Mikey Yhamel who encouraged their teammates and chattered from the bench from the beginning of the game. They manifested the positive spirit and sportsmanship that make for the best teammates a teammate could ask for.
Golden Arm Award: Gio Villanueva (2 innings pitched, 2 K's, 6 runs- 1 unearned, 2 walks, 7 hits) Jonathan Olsen (1 1/3 innin pitched, 3 K's, 3 walks, 4 hits, 8 runs-3 unearned) Daniel Garcia (2 runs, 1 walk, 1 hit)
Golden Glove Award: David Young (1 put out, 1 assist); Nick Scwetz (2 put outs); Daniel Garcia (1 assist) Dakota Oberhauser ( 1 put out)
Silver Sluggers: Daniel Garcia (2 for 3, 2 runs, RBI); Gio Villanueva (2 for 3), David Young & Jonathan Olsen (both earned a walk)
Web Gem: With a runner on 1st & 2nd, the Parkview batter hit a hard line drive at Andrew Garcia in left field. He charged the ball, caught the line drive and quickly gunned to David Young at 2nd base to double off the runner who thought the ball was going to drop in. End of rally.
Big Stick Awards: Niko Navarro (3 for 3, HOME RUN, 3 RBI's, run) Nick Schwetz (1 for 3, HOME RUN, 2 RBI's, run)

Vineyard loses their first game of the State Tournament and of the 2008 All-Star season... |
|
|
After having earned 8 consecutive victories, the Vineyard boys got their first taste of defeat Sunday afternoon against a good Carmel Mountain Ranch team. After having been on the winning end of several mercy wins, the boys were on the short end of the stick this time and lost 11 - 0.
Everthing the Vineyard team hit was right at the opposing defense and they made a couple of web gems to steal a couple hits from us. Our defense was shaky by committing 4 errors in 3 innings. Carmel Mountain had a few hard hit balls but several others just found the holes that we're used to getting. It was a tough loss for the boys but they remained optimistic that we can get our winning mojo back to keep their amazing run going!
Team awards for the Game were:
Golden Glove: Michael Yhamel (great job behind the plate), Gio Villanueva (4 put outs), Jojo Hamilton (1 put out) Eric Perez (1 assist), Nick Schwetz (1 put out), Jonathan Olsen (1 put out)
Silver Sluggers: Niko Navarro (reached base on a hard hit ground ball to 2nd which was mishandled by the 2nd baseman), Nick Schwetz (solid line drive to RF caught by outfielder)
Web Gems: Jojo Hamilton running about 25 yards from RF to track down a fly ball on the RF line.
With runners on 1st & 3rd, the runner on 1st took off for 2nd base. Michael Yhamel made a strong throw as if throwing down to 2nd. Pitcher Niko Navarro cut off the throw and threw a strike to Gio Villanueva at 3rd to get the runner who was faked out on the play - end of inning.
Big Stick: Michael Yhamel hit the hardest ball put in play by the Vineyard boys to deep right center field but the opposing center fielder ran it down and made a diving catch to steal a hit away from Mikey.
Golden Arms: Niko Navarro (2 1/3 innings pitched, 2 K's, 5 runs-3 earned, 6 hits) Jonathan Olsen (1/3 inning pitched, 5 runs - 3 earned, 1 hit, 2 walks) Eric Perez (1/3 inning pitched, 1 run, 1 hit)
The game is done boys - ERASE IT FROM MEMORY & REMEMBER WHAT GOT US HERE:
PLAY CATCH WELL, HIT THE BALL HARD, ENCOURAGE ONE ANOTHER & SUCCESS WILL FOLLOW!!!

VINEYARD Wins! VINEYARD Wins! VINEYARD Wins the California SECTION 8 CHAMPIONSHIP! |
|
|
The Vineyard 11/10 year old all-star team gave fans at the game the experience of witnessing argueably one the best and most exciting little league games ever played Tuesday night at John Galvin Park in Ontario. The win EARNED the boys the CALIFORNIA SECTION 8 CHAMPIONSHIP and a spot in the Division III California State Tournament beginning Sunday 7/20/08!
The boys came out hitting the ball as usual but this time, the balls were hit right at the opposing team and Canyon Hills made their plays early on. Vineyard did not score in the 1st inning for the first time this postseason. Canyon Hills put up 2 runs in the first inning. In the 2nd inning, Gio Villanueva continued his power hitting by hitting his 6th HOME RUN in All-Stars which cut the lead to 2-1. Canyon Hills scored two more runs in the bottom of the 2nd as the defense faltered by committing two errors. Niko Navarro also battled through the first two innings by walking four batters. However, he battled all the way through and was able to get out of the 1st and 2nd with two runners left on base each inning. Both teams went scoreless in the 3rd & Vineyard did not score in the 4th. Canyon Hills added three more runs in the bottom of the 4th to go up 7 - 1.
That's when the drama began and the Vineyard boys lit up the sky! In the top of the 5th, Andrew Garcia sparked the Vineyard comeback by singling to left field. Daniel Garcia then hit a line drive that was caught by the SS. Jeremy Baker walked to put runners at 1st and 2nd with one out. Niko Navarro came to bat and with an 0 -2 count, he hit a HOME RUN high over the left center field wall and off the scoreboard which sparked the energy in the Vineyard bats.
Down 7 -4 with one out, Mikey Yhamel had a great at bat to draw a walk. Canyon Hills wanted nothing to do with Gio Villanueva and intentionally walked him to bring the tying run to the plate. Dakota Oberhauser promptly hit a single up the middle to load the bases. Erik Perez came to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a sacrifice fly to the outfield which drove in a run & made the score 7 -5.
With two outs & runners on 1st and 2nd, Jonathan Olsen then hit a 1 -1 pitch deep over the left field fence for a 3 run HOME RUN and the lead. The Vineyard faithful went crazy - I can still hear them now: "Let's Go Vineyard!", "Let's Go Vineyard!"
Eric Perez shut down Canyon Hills in the 5th. In the top of the 6th, Daniel Garcia walked to lead off the inning and Nick Schwetz added some insurance by stroking a 2 run HOME RUN over the left center field fence. Eric got the Canyon Hills team 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 6th to save the W for Vineyard!
We couldn't have written a better script to earn the Victory...

In the last inning with two outs, the Canyon Hills batter hit a laser at third baseman Niko Navarro who snagged the line drive to end the game - Vineyard wins again!

VINEYARD begins Section 8 Tournament with a hard fought Win! |
|
|
The Vineyard boys got their first taste of being behind in a game Saturday afternoon at John Galvin Park in Ontario. They were able to dig deep down to fight back and pull out an 8 - 4 victory over District 49 champion Apple Valley American.
Vineyard got off to it's usual fast start by taking a 1 -0 lead in the 1st but left two runners in scoring position. Apple Valley went up 3 -1 in the 2nd inning and our boys had their first taste of trailing in an all-star game. However, they responded big time when put to the challenge by their coaches. Niko Navarro and Jason Bennett singled and then Gio Villanueva crushed the first of his two 3 Run Home Runs to give Vineyard a 4 -3 lead. The boys added an insurance run in the 4th inning when Mikey Yhamel walked to start the inning. Jojo Hamilton then laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to put Mikey in scoring position. Daniel Garcia then hit a double to the left center field gap to bring home Yhamel with what proved to be the game winning run. The boys added some breathing room in the 5th when Niko Navarro doubled, Jason Bennett walked and Gio Villanueva pounded his second 3 Run Home Run of the game.
Niko Navarro reached his pitch limit going 4 1/3 innings and striking out 10 out of the 13 outs he recorded. He battled through a rough 2nd inning where he walked 4 batters but got out of a bases loaded jam. He also got out of a bases loaded jam in the 3rd by striking out a BIG Apple Valley hitter to end the inning. Jonathan Olsen came in to record 1 inning of relief pitching. He struck out 1, allowed 1 run and only walked 1 batter. Eric Perez closed out the game by pitching 2/3 of an inning and striking out the last batter to end the game.
Team Awards for the Game were:
Golden Gloves: Nick Schwetz (2 put outs), Eric Perez (1 assist, 1 put out), Jason Bennett (2 put outs at the plate)
Silver Sluggers: Niko Navarro (3 for 4, 2 Runs), Daniel Garcia (2 for 4, Run, RBI), Nick Schwetz (1 for 4), Jason Bennett (1 for 2, 2 Runs, 2 walks), Michael Yhamel (1 for 1, Run, Walk), Jonathan Olsen (1 for 2)
Web Gems: With bases loaeded in the 2nd, Gio Villanueva fielded a ground ball in the hole between 3B & SS, made a 360 degree spin and fired to Jason Bennett for the force out at home.
In the 5th inning with a runner at 1st, Eric Perez fielded a ground ball at short, flipped to Niko Navarro at 2nd who caught the ball with his bare hand and threw to 1st. We got the force at 2nd but the runner at 1st beat the throw.
In the last inning with a runner on 1st, Daniel Garcia came flying in from right field on a ball that got through the infield. He fielded the ball cleanly and gunned to Eric Eric Perez at 2nd for the force out.
Also in the last inning, on a ball that through the infield, Jeremy baker came flying in from center field to field the ball cleanly and fired a strike to Jason Bennett at home who dug the short hop throw and applied the tag to the runner trying to score from 2nd.

VINEYARD storms into the DISTRICT 71 FINALS 12 - 0...! |
|
|
The 11/10 year old all-stars stormed past a very good Alta Loma team Monday night to earn a birth in the district final Wednesday night at Heritage Park. Vineyard will play Deer Canyon Little League @ 7 pm.
Vineyard got going fast in the 1st inning with a hit by Daniel Garcia who took 2nd when the left fielder misplayed the ball. Nick Schwetz got him over to 3rd on a ground out to 2nd & Niko Navarro singled to right center to drive home the only run Vineyard would need. Gio Villanueva then had a very good at bat to earn a walk after going down 0 balls, 2 strikes. Then with runners on 1st & 2nd, Jeremy Baker came to the plate and hit a 3 run HOME RUN over the right center field fence for a 4 -0 Vineyard lead!
Niko Navarro went on to pitch a NO-HITTER over 6 innings. He struck out 9 batters in the game and only walked two. The other two Alta Loma base runners got on via defensive errors.
Team Awards for the Game were:
Mr Positive and Hustle Awards: The ENTIRE VINEYARD team. The boys were chattering for & encouraging their teammates from start to finish which is difficult to do especially when your team builds a big lead.
Silver Slugger Awards: Daniel Garcia (1 for 3, 2 Runs & 1 Walk), Nick Schwetz (1 for 4, RBI, Run), Niko Navarro (2 for 2, 3 Runs, 2 Walks, RBI), Gio Villanueva (1 for 2, 2 RBI's, 2 Runs, 2 walks) Eric Perez (1 for 4, 2 RBI's)
Golden Glove: Eric Perez - shortstop (3 assists, 2 put outs), Nick Schwetz first base (6 put outs), Jason Bennett (another outstanding job behind the plate)
Web Gem: With a runner on 2nd base in the 1st inning, a ground ball was hit to Gio Villanueva at 3rd, he looked the runner back and made an amazing fake throw to 1st (which fooled almost everybody that witnessed it, including the runner & 3rd base coach). The base coach sent the runner & Gio aggressively ran at the runner who was trying to advance to tag him out. Rally killer.
Big Stick Award: Jason Bennett (3 for 4, 3 RBI's, 2 Runs & he narrowly [maybe 6 inches] missed a HR) Jeremy Baker (2 for 3, HR, 3 RBI's, Run)
Golden Arm Award: Niko Navarro (6 innings pitched, 9 K's, 2 BB's, 0 runs, 0 HITS)
Great job Vineyard. As we have emphasized all along, keep playing catch well, keep hitting the ball hard, keep encouraging each other & SUCCESS will follow!!!!!
